This I-kernel provides a) an offset of the NIMS boresight from the spacecraft L vector, b) mirror position tables in cone and cross-cone for the various NIMS mirror states, c) a mirror position, d) Mode_RIM tables, which point to the correct mirror position table for each 1/2 minor frame in a RIM (for each NIMS mode) and e) the focal length of the telescope. Additional tables must be included if new modes are added to NIMS and/or if the mirror positions or focal length evolve with time or temperature. One minor frame refers to 2/3 of a second -- the time it takes for a complete mirror scan. References -------------------------------------------------------- 1. ``Preliminary I-kernel Specification,'' (NAIF document number 177.0), by Ian Underwood, 1/19/90. 2. KERNEL ``Required Reading'' file, released by NAIF, available on the PRINCE VAX in directory DUA1:[NBACHMAN.SPICE.KER], having file name KERNEL.REQ. Implementation Notes -------------------------------------------------------- This file is used by the SPICE system as follows: programs that make use of the I-kernel must `load' the kernel, normally during program initialization. Loading the kernel associates data items with their names in a data structure called the `kernel pool'. The SPICELIB routine LDPOOL loads a kernel file into the pool as shown below. CALL LDPOOL ( 'NIMS.TIK' ) In order for a program or subroutine to extract data from the pool, the SPICELIB routine RTPOOL is used. See [2] for more details. File Format -------------------------------------------------------- This file conforms to the I-kernel format specification. Details of the I-kernel file format are given in [2]. For convenience, a few basics are repeated here: All pertinent data follow the `begindata' delimiter. Similarly, all text portions follow the `begintext' delimiter. The first `begindata' delimiter need not be preceded by a `begintext' delimiter. Note, for example, that there is no `begintext' delimiter at the start of this file. The occurence of these delimiters on a line in this file must be accompanied by nothing else on that line. Naming Conventions -------------------------------------------------------- All names referencing values in this I kernel start with the characters `INS' followed by the NIMS instrument number (including the negative sign). This naming scheme is standard for all I-kernel files and was instigated to distinguish I-kernel data from other types of data that may also be loaded in the kernel pool. The remainder of the name is an underscore character, followed by the unique name of the data item. For example, the boresight cone offset for the NIMS instrument has the name INS-77000_BORESIGHT_CONE_OFFSET The upper bound on the length of the name of any data item is 32 characters. This limit is a Fortran parameter and can be adjusted if necessary. If the same item is included in more then one file, or if the same item appears more than once within a single file, the latest value supersedes any earlier values. Note that this makes it possible for files to contain a history of changes to an item, without making obsolete values accessible to a program. NIMS Assumptions -------------------------------------------------------- 1. NIMS boresight lies between MP 9 and 10 (MP 0-19) 2. NIMS boresight is displaced from the L vector (SSI boresight) by approximately -0.25 milliradians in both cone and cross-cone. 3. The timing of acquisition of data for a given mirror position shall be: The 0th mirror position occurs on RTI 0 of a minor frame. Each minor frame has 40 mirror positions sampled at even time intervals. This assumption is not exactly correct, so this I-kernel includes a timing lookup table. 4. The mirror is assumed to move in increments of pure cross cone, this I-kernel, however, does allow lookup for cone displacement - now assumed to be 0. 5. Each mirror displacement is assumed to be exactly 1 FOV, 0.5 milliradians. This is reflected in the cross-cone displacement table. 6. The mirror displacements are assumed to be independent of temperature. 7. The first mirror motion direction is assumed to be down. Data -------------------------------------------------------- a. The NIMS boresight offset from the L vector has two values in milliradians: cone and cross cone. \begindata INS-77000_BORESIGHT_XCONE_OFFSET = 0.25 INS-77000_BORESIGHT_CONE_OFFSET = -0.25 \begintext ! 14apr94 -- lwk: changed both above values from 0.0 to -0.25 ! 8oct97 -- lwk: changed X-cone offset from -0.25 to +0.25 b. The mirror position tables have 20 values each and cover the time interval of 1/2 minor frame. The tables state the offset from the NIMS nominal boresight in cross-cone in milliradians. Nominal increment is 0.5 milliradians. Similarly, the cone offset tables state the offset in cone. Nominal offset is 0.0. The mirror position tables consist of the following (for both cone and cross-cone).
