PDS_VERSION_ID = PDS3 RECORD_TYPE = STREAM DATA_SET_ID = "HST-S-WFPC2-3-RPX-V1.0" OBJECT = TEXT PUBLICATION_DATE = 1998-09-16 NOTE = "Description of the geometry files provided on this volume." END_OBJECT = TEXT END DESCRIPTION OF THE GEOMETRY FILES ON THIS VOLUME ------------------------------------------------ This file describes the files present in the GEOMETRY directory on this volume. The files are: GEOMINFO.TXT - This file. IEEE/... - SPICE ephemeris kernels in IEEE binary format. This is the proper format for Sun and Silicon Graphics workstations and also for Macintosh computers. PC/... - SPICE ephemeris kernels in PC binary format. This is also the correct format for DEC Alpha/Unix systems. VAXG/... - SPICE ephemeris kernels in DEC Alpha/VMS binary format. TRANSFER/... - SPICE ephemeris kernels in transfer (ASCII) format. NAIF0006.TLC - SPICE leap seconds kernel file, valid for all platforms. NAIF0006.LBL - The detached PDS label for the above file. PCK00006.TPC - SPICE body constants kernel file, valid for all platforms. PCK00006.LBL - The detached PDS label for the above file. Each subdirectory contains SPICE kernel files that describe the orbits of the bodies in the Saturn system during (and beyond) the period of the 1995/6 Saturn ring plane crossings. Orbits have been updated based on initial results from 1995, except for Prometheus and Pan. To use these files you will need the SPICE toolkit, available from the PDS Navigation and Ancillary Information (NAIF) Node at http://pds.jpl.nasa.gov/naif.html Each subdirectory contains the following files: SAT060.BSP - The ephemeris for Saturn, Earth, Moon, Sun, and the predicted orbit for Pan during the period January 1, 1995 through December 31, 1996. SAT060.LBL - The detached PDS label for the above file. SAT077.BSP - The ephemeris for Saturn, Earth, Moon, Sun, and Saturn's major satellites (Mimas, Enceladus, Tethys, Dione, Rhea, Titan, Hyperion, and Iapetus) during the period January 1, 1994 through December 31, 2000. SAT077.LBL - The detached PDS label for the above file. SAT081.BSP - The ephemeris for Saturn and its smaller inner moons excluding Pan (Janus, Epimetheus, Helene, Telesto, Calypso, Atlas, Prometheus, and Pandora) during the period January 5, 1993 through January 4, 2000. SAT081.LBL - The detached PDS label for the above file. The ephemeris files in the TRANSFER directory end in .XSP rather than .BSP. These are "transfer format" ASCII files that can be converted to binary for any platform via the NAIF program SPACIT. This should only be necessary if you are trying to use the SPICE files on an unsupported platform. IMPORTANT NOTE REGARDING ASCII TEXT FILES Different popular operating systems use different standards for how ASCII text files are formatted. On Unix systems, lines are terminated by a (linefeed character, control-J, ASCII 10). On Macintosh computers, lines are terminated by a (carriage return character, control-M, ASCII 13). On PCs, lines are terminated by a pair. PDS standards require all text files to use line termination. If the PDS label indicates INTERCHANGE_FORMAT = ASCII or RECORD_TYPE = STREAM, then this line termination is in use. In this directory tree, this applies in particular to the files *.TLS, *.TPC, and *.XSP. Users on Unix and Macintosh computers will need to change the line termination on these files before they use them in the SPICE toolkit. This translation can be handled via text editors or a variety of utilities. For example, the Unix tr (translate) command can be used to change carriage returns to blanks: tr "\015" " " newfile.txt
