END_OBJECT = TEXT END DESCRIPTION OF DOCUMENTATION FILES ON THIS VOLUME ------------------------------------------------- The directory contains files that document the instruments, experiments and file formats on this volume. The files included are: DOCINFO.TXT - This file. EZINDEX.TXT - Contains a brief listing of all the files in this data set. Much more information can be found in the files of the INDEX directory, but this file is much more readable. FITS.TXT - Contains a brief overview of the FITS file format. FITSDEFS.TXT - Contains brief descriptions of all the FITS keywords used in the data files on this volume. FITSXREF.TXT - Contains a cross-reference table indicating which FITS headers contain which keywords. FITSINFO.* - A complete description of the FITS file standard, in Postscript, LaTeX, and ASCII formats. See FITSINFO.LBL for an explanation of the other files. HSTDESC.HTM - A description of the HST spacecraft. HSTDESC.LBL - Detached PDS label for the above. HSTHB*.* - Excerpts from the HST Data Handbook, as provided by Space Telescope Science Institute. Only those sections relevant to WFPC2 data have been included. This document is provided in Postscript and Adobe Acrobat (PDF) formats. See the label file HSTHB.LBL for further details. PDSDD.TXT - Excerpts from the PDS Data Dictionary, defining every keyword appearing in the label for a data file in this data set. PROPnnnn.TXT - HST proposal abstracts for all the HST observations included in this data set. The last four characters are the numeric proposal ID. The HST proposal ID associated with any given file in this data set is found inside the NOTE field of the file's label. TUTORIAL.TXT - A tutorial about how to use this data set, including a summary of how to determine the geometry and calibration of these images. WFPC2*.* - Version 4.0 of WFPC2 Instrument Handbook, as provided by Space Telescope Science Institute. This document is provided in Postscript and plain ASCII text formats. See the label file WFPC2.LBL for further details. ZIPINFO.TXT - A brief overview of the Zip file format used on this volume. NOTE REGARDING ASCII TEXT FILES Different popular operating systems use different standards for how ASCII text files are formatted. On Unix systems, lines are terminated by a (linefeed character, control-J, ASCII 10). On Macintosh computers, lines are terminated by a (carriage return character, control-M, ASCII 13). On PCs, lines are terminated by a pair. PDS standards require all text files to use line termination. If the PDS label indicates INTERCHANGE_FORMAT = ASCII or RECORD_TYPE = STREAM, then this line termination is in use. In this directory, this applies to all files except those in Adobe Acrobat format (*.PDF). On occasion, users on Unix and Macintosh computers may need to change the line termination on some text files before they can use them. This can be handled via text editors or a variety of utilities. For example, the Unix tr (translate) command can be used to change carriage returns to blanks: tr "\015" " " newfile.txt
