SMITH" PRODUCER_INSTITUTION_NAME = "GODDARD SPACE FLIGHT CENTER" DESCRIPTION = "This data product is a planetary radius map of Mars at a resolution of 0.125 by 0.125 degrees, based on altimetry data acquired by the Mars Global Surveyor MOLA instrument and accumulated over the course of the mission so far. The MOLA Precision Experiment Data Records (PEDRs) are the source for this data set. The map is in the form of a binary table with one row for each 0.125-degree latitude, from 0 to 360 degrees East longitude and 90 to -90 degrees latitude. The binned data include all MOLA nadir observations from the Mapping Phase, from the end of aerobraking through June 2000. Additionally, off-nadir observations of the north pole are included from 87 N latitude and northward, taken during the spring of 1998, and of both poles taken during Mapping from 87 N and S to the poles. Parts of orbits are excluded where solutions for these orbits are deemed to be poor. Also excluded are shots more than 1 degree off-nadir (except as noted above), channel 4 returns, and any returns not classified as ground returns, e.g. clouds or noise, according to the SHOT_CLASSIFICATION_CODE. A total of approximately 333 million observations are represented. In this map, the value in each bin is the mean of the planetary radius measurements that fall within the bin. This radius map is accompanied by a topography map, an areoid map, and a map showing the number of observations per bin. To generate the topography map associated with this radius map, an areoid value is computed at the location of each planetary radius observation in a bin. The areoid value is subtracted from the planetary radius value to obtain the topography at that point. The median of the results becomes the topography value for the bin. Median values are used for the topography map to better show extreme highs and lows. Mean values are used for the planetary radius map because they are better for showing the integrated shape. Note that MOLA uses a different orbit numbering scheme from that used by the MGS Project. The Project reset its orbit counter to 1 at the beginning of the Mapping Phase. Since MOLA had already generated products identified by orbit number prior to the Mapping Phase, it was decided to use the Project orbit number plus 10000 to identify MOLA Mapping Phase products, thereby avoiding duplicate product IDs. Subtract 10000 from a MOLA mapping phase orbit number to determine the equivalent MGS Project orbit number. Since the MOLA topographic data are cumulative over the whole mission, the orbit number range for these products spans both the Orbit Insertion and Mapping Phases.
