Open Loop Data ============== Data Collection --------------- We have obtained the first five data sets from RST ORT-3. The final data set from ORT-3 was acquired earlier and was reported in yesterday's Instrument Health Report. RS ORT-3 was conducted at DSS 15 on 97/204-205. The ORT simulated three MGS orbits, with one ingress and one egress occultation per orbit. Anomalies --------- The carrier signal was clipped at the beginning of the first simulated occultation. The attenuation was increased by 3 dB 66 seconds after the start of the recording to eliminate the clipping. Until that time, harmonics were present in the power spectra. There were frequency spurs at 30 Hz above and below the carrier which tracked the carrier through all six ORT-3 recordings. The magnitude of these spurs was approximately 50 dB below that of the carrier. There did not seem to be any large carrier amplitude fluctuations during the test. Analyses -------- The six RS ORT recordings were processed with a single execution of our "procMultiODR" script. The script ran for just over 2.5 hours. During the middle of the ORT test, the USO frequency was estimated to be 8423152958.32 Hz. The recordings were made with the newly-installed DSP-R software. Among other things, this software was installed to fix the multitude of errors we have seen in the recording of POCA time tags, readback frequencies and ramp rates. In the six ORT-3 data sets, there was only a single POCA error. We have seen this same sort of error in the past. The new DSP-R software was not expected to fix this type of problem. In the forth recording at time tag 01:28:29, there was a 10 microHertz error between the recorded frequency and the expected frequency given the previous frequency and ramp rate. As always, this occurred at the time of a ramp rate change. Our software "fixes" this problem so that processing can continue. However, WE DO NOT KNOW IF WE ARE FIXING THE POCA DATA CORRECTLY. We do not know whether the final recorded ramp rate before a ramp change is incorrect and all the readback frequencies that are recorded are correct, or whether the recorded ramp rates are all correct and an error is propagated through all subsequent readback frequencies following an erroneous ramp change. We are assuming the former (because it is easy to fix), but it is just as likely that the situation is the latter.
