These were occultations 8755i-8758i (start times 10:42:00 through 16:36:00). The first three occultations on the next pass at DSS 15 also suffered from the "sawtooth" problem (8767i-8769i, start times 2001/053-10:15:00 to 14:10:00). There have been occasional sawtooth problems recently, but we have not generally reported them individually. This is the first time in memory that an entire pass has been lost and the first time the sawtooth has carried over from one pass to another. Occultation 8830i (DSS 15, start time 2001/058-13:52:00) was lost when ground antennas were swapped but RSSG was not notified and the DSP was not reconfigured. Data collection for occultation 8853i (DSS 15, start time 2001/060- 11:00:00) ended prematurely after 165 seconds. The ingress was not captured. Cause of the problem is not known. Occultation 8844i (start time 2001/059-17:20:00) was captured at two ground antennas -- DSS 15 (HEA1059A.TXT) and DSS 34 (this report). This was noted in an earlier report (HEA1039A.TXT). Andy Kwok reported to Sami Asmar as follows: E.Graat of the MGS Nav team reported to me on 02/06/01, one ISA (z70919) and four DR's (N70925, N70926, N70927, and N70928). These anomalies were documented as item number 186 on the weekly anomaly spreadsheet on the same day and have been worked on since then. One half of this item (#186 MGS @ DSS-45 (DR N70927)) was resolved on 02/20/01 (about a week ago) with an incorrect RTLT used for the tracking pass. The other half, having to do with unexplainable biases in the range data, is still under investigation. An attempt to resolve the biases was made (an e-mail was issued by me on 02/16/01) by increasing the last ranging component (from 11 to 14). Unfortunately, it did not work out the way I expected (judging from the post-fit range resids provided by E.Graat on 02/23 and today).
