According to Bruce Banerdt, the reasons for the anomaly are not yet clear: ...the actual trigger was a disagreement between a sun sensor's apparent detection of the sun location and the expected sun ephemeris on board. It doesn't appear to have been a command problem or a programming glitch. Several options are being investigated. The leading candidate is an unexpected reflection from a solar panel caused either by a relatively new procedure for pointing the panels (not serious) or by the damaged panel having broken further and pointing in an unanticipated direction (serious). There is some evidence that may point to the latter, but it is very weak.
