PDS_VERSION_ID = PDS3 RECORD_TYPE = STREAM OBJECT = TEXT PUBLICATION_DATE = 1999-04-19 NOTE = "MGS RST Instrument Health Report HEA9109A.TXT" END_OBJECT = TEXT END Miscellaneous ============= Because of the weekend, this is the first report since HEA9106A.TXT. The spacecraft continues in contingency mode following the HGA azimuth gimbal anomaly late last week. Communications are via the low-gain antennas. Some occultations have been captured, but with telemetry on and relatively low SNR. Brief reports have been received on the situation: From Kenny Starnes at LMA (late Friday): The S/C is still in Contingency Mode and is safe with ample power margin and good telecommunication links. Diagnostics have confirmed the root cause to be a stuck HGA azimuth gimbal. The flight system responded as expected and correctly for such an occurrence. Further information will be retrieved Saturday by playing back recorded data from the time of the incident. The S/C will be repositioned to point the HGA bore sight at Earth to accomplish the high data rates of the playback. It is anticipated that careful testing will ensue to nudge the HGA back in the opposite direction slightly to attempt to 'free' it and characterize its performance. From Trish Priest at JPL (Sunday): The spacecraft was having a problem gaining inertial reference, but the spacecraft team believes that they have resolved that problem. Later this evening, they will point the HGA to Earth for a few hours (about 2 orbits) in order to retrieve the telemetry from the period around the entry into contingency mode. From Bruce Waggoner at JPL (today - Monday morning): Last night the GDEs were powered off and inertial reference was established on the spacecraft. Some aspect of the HGA stepper motor pulsing was probably effecting the AACS adversely and most of the weekend was spent attempting to acquire inertial reference. Today the S/C will likely be slewed to point the HGA at Earth and downlink the data from the SSR containing the anomalous event. No theories have been proposed by the SCT that appear plausible or explain the anomaly. These three channels are missing from data collected since the HGA azimuth gimbal anomaly began. Open Loop Data ============== Data Collection --------------- We have transferred the following open loop data to Stanford: YYYY/DDD DSS DSP SAMP BW DSP BIT REC RECS RECS MAX START STOP RATE MODE RESN LEN MSSG SNR -------- --- -------- -------- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----- ---- ----- 1999/108 54 21:20:00 21:27:00 5000 2000 2 12 1666 2101 0 19.5 1999/108 54 22:35:00 22:43:00 5000 2000 2 12 1666 2401 0 17.5 1999/108 54 23:17:00 23:25:00 5000 2000 2 12 1666 2401 0 17.6 1999/109 54 00:33:00 00:41:00 5000 2000 2 12 1666 2401 0 18.1 1999/109 54 01:15:00 01:23:00 5000 2000 2 12 1666 2401 0 18.8 1999/109 54 02:31:00 02:38:00 5000 2000 2 12 1666 2101 0 16.5 1999/109 54 03:12:00 03:21:00 5000 2000 2 12 1666 2701 0 16.0 Anomalies --------- Four occultations at DSS 45 were lost on 1999/107 when the SPC Server at SPC 40 was down. Another four were lost when the remote operations script failed to run. Approximately eight occultations were lost at DSS 54 on 1999/107 because the DSP was not in the link. After the HGA azimuth gimbal anomaly began, the ACE announced that radio science data would not be collected. Approximately eight occultations were lost at DSS 25 on 1999/108 because the directory in which tuning predict files are kept was full. Data starting 1999/108-21:20:00 appear to have three attenuator changes. All of the data described above (collected or not) fell within the time period of the HGA azimuth gimbal anomaly. The spacecraft was transmitting on the low-gain antenna and telemetry was on. Data may have very limited science value.
