The four occultations below are the best set collected since the anomaly period began. The main obstacle to data collection has been failure of DSN stations to include the DSP in the link on the assumption there was "no science". But Trish Priest has been working that problem, and it appears we may have higher returns soon. Even with telemetry on, HGA occultations during this period have SNR comparable to completely optimized observations at solar conjunction. There was a meeting/telecon this morning to discuss mission options under the present HGA constraints. Len Tyler reports: This morning's MGS project meeting resulted in a decision to return to mapping in the normal HGA mode about 5/6-7/99. Evidently the E-beta angle at that time will be beyond the stuck-limit of the HGA. Unless there are additional problems mapping will continue in this mode until February, 2000, after which time the situation will be reaccessed. It may be necessary to a fixed HGA pointing strategy at that time.
