PDS_VERSION_ID = PDS3 RECORD_TYPE = STREAM OBJECT = TEXT PUBLICATION_DATE = 1999-07-19 NOTE = "MGS RST Instrument Health Report HEA9200A.TXT" END_OBJECT = TEXT END Miscellaneous ============= Because of the weekend, this is the first report since HEA9197A.TXT. The last surface occultation occurred at 200/07:38:00. Because the HGA rewind has been falling on top of the occultation period, only the ionospheric part of egress occultations has been captured during approximately the past month. Beginning yesterday (day 199) and continuing through the end of August, the default tracking mode is two-way. Only open-loop data from passes scheduled to be one-way will be collected. However, after 3 August (day 215) there is currently only one scheduled downlink-only pass (August 27th), so the volume of open-loop data will be dropping to barely a trickle over the next two weeks. A search for surface echoes in recent DSS 63 files (two above and one from 1999/194) has turned up nothing. Carrier-to-noise ratios of 43 dB should allow occasional detection of surface echoes, based on past experience. In the DSS 63 cases, the surface may not be smooth enough or the HGA beam may not illuminate enough surface to result in an echo. Data starting 1999/194-22:24:00 have carrier dropouts after egress. Data starting 1999/195-02:19:00 have poor carrier and noise baselines -- perhaps from local weather. Data starting 1999/199-08:15:00 at DSS 42 were lost because the (unusual) configuration for collecting open-loop data at that station was not in place. The following data have not been found. He was looking for differences in Allan Deviation between open-loop data acquisition systems at SPC 40. He found none, nor did he find any differences among DSN complexes. See Figure HEA9200A.PS1 (NB: the electronic file produces a color PostScript plot, which we have printed in black and white on our SOPC HP 4000N printer). As part of troubleshooting at SPC 40, Trish Priest has asked whether there were discernible differences in Allan Deviation from DSP-1 and DSP-2. Joe Twicken computed and plotted values, not only for SPC 40, but for all complexes at both 0.82 and 3.28 sec integrations. Although there are variations, it does not appear that any complex is significantly better or worse than another. Nor does it appear that DSP-1 (used on some days at SPC 40) is either better or worse than DSP-2 in its Allan Deviation. The 3.28 sec Allan Deviations (not shown) are somewhat lower than the 0.8 sec values, and their (subjective) spread is about twice as much.
