Both noise and carrier are affected. The level changes are typically 0.7 dB. Severity varies from orbit to orbit with data from occultations starting at 1999-12-17T00:36:00 and 1999-12-17T01:01:00 showing almost no effects while the data from 1999-12-16T22:38:00 and 1999-12-17T02:34:00 are riddled with gain changes. By comparison, the signal levels in the DSS 54 data are exemplary in amplitude stability. The rms carrier level deviation is less than 0.05 dB over 8 minutes in data from the occultation starting 1999-12-16T12:50:00. Ingress occultations are overlain by HGA rewind activities, but egress data look good for science. Surface echoes, albeit weak, are visible in about a third of the quick look output from both ingress and egress occultations.
