This is the configuration being used so that the HGA azimuth does not get into the region where there is an apparent obstacle. The Project reports that all seems well. For Radio Science there have been three apparent consequences -- one obvious, one unexpected, and one subtle. The obvious consequence is that only ingress occultations are being captured; the spacecraft is not suitably oriented to permit egress observations. The unexpected consequence is NAV Team's difficulty in finding an orbit solution; see 'Closed Loop Data - Anomalies' below for details. This may or may not be related to Beta Supplement operations. The subtle consequence is a sudden increase in the frequency of surface echoes; see 'Open Loop Data - Anomalies' for details. Data from occultation 4113i at DSS 15 (start time 2000/039T03:04:00) have not been found. Now that SNR has been running near or below 50 dB/Hz we have become accustomed to seeing few or no surface echoes in any 24 hour period. Only one of the observations listed above does NOT have a surface echo, and several are quite strong. This suggests that there has been a subtle change in HGA pointing since we began Beta supplement operations, providing more surface illumination and increasing the likelihood of surface echo detection. There are only four range points, which may or may not be good. So it is basically impossible to tell if this problem is due to an unmodeled AMD or something special in the Beta Supplement mode. Any attempt to make a solution today could result in drastically worse predictions than the previous Thursday delivery. Therefore, no delivery will be made today. Just continue using the previous Thursday delivery. (It seems to be holding up fairly well, anyway.) We should be getting AMD information for this period of time around noon on Tuesday. We will then be able to investigate it some more."
