Trish Priest reports that all seems well so far as the spacecraft is concerned, but there were some (unrelated) ground problems. During FHGA there will be less radio tracking of the spacecraft; but the quality of the data when there is tracking should be much improved since there will be no noise from stepper motors. Historians will recall that tomorrow is the 22nd anniversary of the final Viking bistatic radar experiment, conducted on 7 March 1978 and targeted for Olympus Mons. The day-of-year (066) matches today. Tomorrow's MSOP Change Board meeting likely will discuss the proposed MGS bistatic radar experiment, targeted toward the MPL landing site. Data from occultation 4425i (DSS 65, start time 2000/064T14:49:24) were 24 seconds late, but otherwise seem useful. The time lost was while telemetry was still on. Data from occultation 4417i (DSS 15, start time 2000/063T23:08:00) show a +1 dB step in noise baseline about 40 seconds after ingress. Data from occultations 4428i and 4429i (DSS 25, start times 2000/064T 20:42:00 and 22:40:00) were collected using an HEMT front end rather than a maser. They also suffer from serious frequency instabilities and will probably not be useful for science. Trish Priest noted POCA errors being reported by the system during data acquisition. Data from occultation 4447e (DSS 45, start time 2000/066T08:41:00) have +/-0.8 dB fluctuations in carrier amplitude. This looks like atmospheric effects, perhaps at low elevation angle.
