Simpson Stanford University ============================================================================== INTRODUCTION ============================================================================== This file contains an accumulation of corrections and notes for the Mars Global Surveyor Radio Science Team Raw Data Archive - Mars Mapping Phase. ============================================================================== CORRECTIONS AND NOTES ============================================================================== MORS_0401 CATALOG/INST.CAT contains embedded quotes (") in the description. thru These were removed and "in" (for inches) was substituted. MORS_0444 DOCUMENT/OPTG_SIS.TXT contains embedded degree symbols. Those have been removed and "deg" has been substituted. MORS_0401 With few exceptions (perhaps 4), the values for MISSION_NAME and thru INSTRUMENT_HOST_NAME in labels for SAK files are MORS_0449 "MARS_GLOBAL_SURVEYOR". This is an illegal value; double quotes or underscores are acceptable, but not both and not neither. MORS_0401 CATALOG/REF.CAT has an extra "END" line in the middle of the thru file. MORS_0464 MORS_0401 DOCUMENT/DOCINFO.TXT fails to mention OPTG_SIS.TXT. thru MORS_0530 DOCUMENT/IPN_SPK.TXT: Typo TK_DESC.TXT should be replaced by TK_DESCR.TXT. MORS_0401 Labels in the BRO directory should be revised as follows. thru This wording in DESCRIPTION MORS_0531 y is the one-digit year (3 or 4) should be replaced by y is the one-digit year (0-9) MORS_0401 OPT/9063287A.LBL and SPK/9063287A.LBL describe prediction files. INSTRUMENT_HOST_NAME is MARS_GLOBAL_SURVEYOR_SIM rather than the usual "MARS GLOBAL SURVEYOR." MORS_0402 This volume contains 9066071A.TDF in the TDF directory. The file spans the boundary between the Orbit Insertion and Mapping phases of the mission. MORS_0403 The Volume ID of this CD was incorrectly set to MORS_403. MORS_0404 Extra copies of the following files appear on this CD. The BRO file is already on MORS_0403; the ODR (and its corresponding BRO) is on MORS_0405. BRO/90831707.PS1 ODR/90871525.ODR The following files appear on this CD with incorrect START_TIME and STOP_TIME in their labels. Two-digit year was incorrectly set to 19 in the data file, and the label shows the year as 1919. Corrected labels and (uncorrected) data files appear on MORS_0405. ODR/90870932.ODR ODR/90871129.ODR ODR/90871244.ODR ODR/90871327.ODR MORS_0404 CUMINDEX.TAB entries with erroneus START_TIME and STOP_TIME thru (showing year 1919; see explanation above) for the following end ODR files: ODR/90870932.ODR ODR/90871129.ODR ODR/90871244.ODR ODR/90871327.ODR MORS_0404 There are two labels with illegal characters in the ODF thru directory. 9085087A.LBL and 9086087A.LBL have double '^h' MORS_0516 characters in values for keyword ORIGINAL_PRODUCT_ID. These propagated into INDEX/INDEX.TAB and INDEX/CUMINDEX.TAB; the latter was corrected in MORS_0517. MORS_0405 90890705.ODR in the ODR contains Ka-Band data from HGA calibration activities. The following files in the ODR directory have incorrect two-digit years in the DSP headers. Labels have been corrected manually. 90870932.ODR 90871129.ODR 90871244.ODR 90871327.ODR MORS_0411 The high-gain antenna (HGA) azimuth gimbal became stuck late on 1999/105 or early on 1999/106. A full set of spacecraft engineering data for 1999/106 was not obtained until several days later. The original engineering data are in ECH/9106106A.ECH while the later version is in ECH/9106106B.ECH. There are corresponding versions of the CSV files. No additional data was found for either days 105 or 107. For several days following the HGA anomaly, radio occultations and tracking were spotty. Typically the spacecraft low-gain antennas were used, the transponder was in 2-way mode, and telemetry was on. MORS_0413 First CD containing Antenna Gimbal Kernel (AGK) files; files covering 1999-03-29 through 1999-04-28 were included on this volume. First CD containing Antenna SPK (ASP), Hinge CK (HCK), and Text Frame Kernel (TFK) files -- all in the CALIB directory. SIS changes covering the ASP, HCK, and TFK files were not completed in time to be included with this volume; see MORS_0414. MORS_0414 File ANTFILES.TXT in the DOCUMENT directory has an embedded double thru quote in the NOTE field of the label. MORS_0519 MORS_0416 File AMD/9126127A.AMD (ORIGINAL_PRODUCT_ID = amdgen.99-127_2.out) has an incorrect STOP_TIME in the label. Stop time should have been 10:13:12.000. The error was corrected and a revised file (with the same ORIGINAL_PRODUCT_ID) became AMD/9126127B.AMD on MORS_0417. MORS_0418 File ERRATA.TXT in the root has two lines with 81 characters. MORS_0433 The label file for HEA/HEA9172A.PS1 is missing. The data file MCH/9168168A.MCH is empty. Query apparently failed, but reason is unknown. MORS_0437 The label file for HEA/HEA9181A.PS1 is missing. Files in the SPK directory named 9178178A.TCK and 9179179A.TCK and their detached labels should be in the TCK directory. Files and labels with the same names and presently in the TCK directory are the same except that labels have not been padded to 80-character lines and data files have not had record delimiters changed from to . MORS_0440 Troposphere Calibration Files beginning with 9182193A.TRO used thru a different format for indicating creation time. Users should MORS_0451 view with suspicion any values for PRODUCT_CREATION_TIME in TRO labels covering files from mid-July to mid-September 1999. The correct creation time can be obtained by searching the TRO file for the latest date/time in lines beginning with '# CREATED'. Label generating software was revised in mid- September and labels starting with 9244256A.TRO (MORS_0451) should be correct. Labels for TRO files received between mid-July and mid- September were created by hand. After mid-September, revised software created the labels. The last label created by hand was for 9244250A.TRO on MORS_0451. MORS_0441 SOE/9195206B.LBL points to 9195206C.SOE rather than 9195206B.SOE. The same problem appears in the INDEX/INDEX.TAB and INDEX/CUMINDEX.TAB files. MORS_0442 ODF/9202203B.LBL points to 9202203A.ODF rather than 9202203B.ODF. The same problem appears in the INDEX/INDEX.TAB and INDEX/CUMINDEX.TAB files. MORS_0443 One line in AAREADME.TXT has 81 characters (instead of the thru required 80). MORS_0468 MORS_0444 First CD containing MCT engineering channel table files. Files from 1999-068 through 1999-131 are available, with more files available on the following CDs. MCT files are currently being created for two engineering channels, M-0725 (AA5 system temperature) and M-0775 (AB5 system temperature). The format and content of OPTG files changed slightly in early August 1999. OPT/9214234A.OPT was in the original format; OPT/9214234B.OPT was identical except that it was in the new format. All OPTG files generated subsequently were in the new format. MORS_0445 Second CD containing MCT engineering channel table files. Files from 1999-132 through 1999-196 are availible. Beginning with the next volume, MORS_0446, the MCT files should be appearing up to date. These initial files had to be distributed over multiple CDs because each CD can hold no more than 256 files of a given type. MORS_0450 ODR/92432050.ODR has records missing at positions 5443, 5444, 8618, and 8619. MORS_0451 ERRATA.TXT lines 118-119 are spurious. thru MORS_0459 MORS_0458 BRO/92432050.PS1 has been erroneously substituted for BRO/92850253.PS1 on this volume. The label has also been substituted. BRO/92432050.PS1 already appears on MORS_0450. MORS_0458 The following files contain two copies of the label thru information. As a result, entries in INDEX/INDEX.TAB and MORS_0516 INDEX/CUMINDEX.TAB are defective. The latter was repaired in MORS_0517. ECH/9287287A.LBL ECH/9288288A.LBL ECH/9289289A.LBL MCH/9287287A.LBL MCH/9288288A.LBL MCH/9289289A.LBL MORS_0468 SPK/9340361A.LBL appears on this volume without its data file. Both label and data files can be found on MORS_0469. The INDEX/CUMINDEX.TAB file on MORS_0468 erroneously lists the data file as being present. MORS_0472 ODR/93540504.ODR has no good data. MORS_0472 AAREADME.TXT: In the ACRONYMS section, 'fiel' should be replaced thru by 'file'. MORS_0530 MORS_0474 The following ODR files have no good data: 93571948.ODR 93572344.ODR 93572117.ODR 93580113.ODR 93572146.ODR 93580141.ODR 93572315.ODR 93580310.ODR MORS_0475 This volume contains only TDFs -- covering 1999/326 to 1999/346. MORS_0478 Files in the ECT and MCT directories created between 2000-01-01 thru and 2000-02-29 have incorrect PRODUCT_CREATION_TIME values. MORS_0497 The year is given as '19100' rather than '2000'. Files affected are: TUS9364A.ECT through TUS0057A.ECT TSY9364A.MCT through TSY0057A.MCT TSZ9364A.MCT through TSZ0057A.MCT Corresponding entries in INDEX/INDEX.TAB and INDEX/CUMINDEX.TAB are also incorrect with the least significant digit in the seconds field truncated. The CUMINDEX.TAB entries were corrected on MORS_0498. MORS_0481 Incorrect START_TIME, STOP_TIME, and PRODUCT_CREATION_TIME were thru entered in INDEX/CUMINDEX.TAB for SOE/0006013A.SOE. The error MORS_0497 was corrected on MORS_0498. The same error appears in INDEX/INDEX.TAB on MORS_0481. MORS_0483 Incorrect START_TIME, STOP_TIME, and PRODUCT_CREATION_TIME were thru entered in INDEX/CUMINDEX.TAB for SOE/0014023A.SOE. The error MORS_0497 was corrected on MORS_0498. The same error appears in INDEX/INDEX.TAB on MORS_0483. MORS_0494 Two files in the BRO directory have incorrect power vs time panels: 00452148.PS1 and 00462318.PS1. In the latter case the start sample time was computed incorrectly, the plotting program failed, and a copy of the power spectra plot was substituted in the lower left panel. It is likely the same thing happened in 00452148.PS1. This is not a serious problem, but users might double check that the first sample in the file actually has the time tag for an even second. MORS_0497 File GDN_SPK.TXT in the DOCUMENT directory has an embedded TAB thru character in line 178. MORS_0519 MORS_0501 File 0001066G.WEA in the WEA directory is identical to file 00010666.WEA on volume MORS_0499. Although the file name made available (ORIGINAL_PRODUCT_ID) was incremented by the supplier, apparently the contents were not. Users needing weather data should use a later file. MORS_0502 Two labels have illegal characters which propagated into INDEX thru files. ION0061092C.LBL and ODF/0078080A.LBL both have double MORS_0516 '^h' characters in values for ORIGINAL_PRODUCT_ID. INDEX/INDEX.TAB and INDEX/CUMINDEX.TAB both include the error; the latter was corrected in MORS_0517. MORS_0504 For unknown reasons file CSV0085A.ECH in the ECH directory was thru not generated in full; nor was the PDS label created. The label MORS_0516 included with the archive was generated by hand. Parts of the label did not reach INDEX/INDEX.TAB or INDEX/CUMINDEX.TAB; the latter was corrected on MORS_0517. MORS_0505 The following were added to the DOCUMENT directory; each has a detached PDS label. Corresponding revisions were made to the software interface specification MGSRSSIS.TXT. AMD_SIS.HTM MIF_SIS.HTM MPF_SIS.HTM LIT_SIS.HTM MPD_SIS.HTM MEDIASIS.HTM These files will also be included on earlier volumes if they are corrected/regenerated after 2000-03-31. New versions of MISSION.CAT and INSTHOST.CAT were also used in the CATALOG directory. MORS_0506 Slightly modified MISSION.CAT in the CATALOG directory. MORS_0508 The following files (and their labels) were omitted from the BRO and directory on MORS_0508. They appear on MORS_0509. MORS_0509 01021241.PS1 01021636.PS1 01022031.PS1 01030026.PS1 01021438.PS1 01021833.PS1 01022229.PS1 01030224.PS1 MORS_0511 The label ECH/CSV0113A.LBL was constructed by hand and thru contains erroneous information (such as times and ROWS). Some MORS_0516 label information did not reach INDEX/INDEX.TAB or INDEX/CUMINDEX.TAB. The latter was repaired in MORS_0517. MORS_0514 Two-channel 50 ksps test data were collected in ODR/01261750.ODR. Two BRO files were produced (BRO/01261750.PS1 and 01261750.PS3), and they share label BRO/01261750.LBL. This is unusual, but acceptable under the SIS. MORS_0516 File 01341716.PS1 in the ODR directory has the upper right plot repeated in the lower left panel. This usually results from a miscalculation of the data volume and abnormal termination of the program computing the power vs time plot (lower left panel). SPC 60 (the DSN complex in Spain) suffered a power failure on 2000-05-11. Radiometric (tracking) data collected after that suffered from an apparent 1-2 second timing error. As of 2000-05-18 the problem had not been corrected. This will affect ODF and TDF files and (indirectly) SPK files (MGS NAV was making empirical corrections before solving for trajectories). MORS_0517 ODR/01351347.ODR is partial data from the bistatic radar experiment conducted 2000-05-14; it was transmitted electronically from SPC 60 and covers only about 9-1/2 minutes around the MPL/DS2 site. The full data set (about 3 hrs) is being shipped on tape and will appear in the archive later. Because two channels were recorded during the bistatic radar experiment, BRO/01351347.LBL points to two files rather than the usual one (BRO/01351347.PS1 and BRO/01351347.PS3, for right- and left-circularly polarized reception, respectively). Significant errors were discovered in INDEX/CUMINDEX.TAB between MORS_0516 and MORS_0517, some going back as far as MORS_0404. These were repaired before MORS_0517 was written. MORS_0517 AGC Voltage and Elevation Angle were extracted and saved as files and in the MCT directory starting with day 2000/135. But the files MORS_0518 for the first few days appear on MORS_0518. Open-loop data (ODR files) from the bistatic radar (surface scattering) experiment on 2000/135 were delayed because they had to be shipped by tape. Those appear on the following volumes: Start/Stop Times Archive Volume ------------------- -------------- 11:46:00 - 12:46:00 MORS_0523 13:43:00 - 14:43:00 MORS_0524 15:41:11 - 16:41:00 MORS_0525 MORS_0518 Antenna ID was extracted and saved in the MCT directory starting with MORS_0518. Antenna ID is the channel (M-0300) which gives the antenna number (e.g., 14, 15, 25, 43, etc.) supplying values in the DSN Monitor stream (MCH and MCT data types). A new CPT source file for DSN Monitor data (CPT0139S.SRC) was received from MGS Data Control and added to the CALIB directory. MORS_0523 ODR/01351146.ODR has 65 records missing (6378-6442). This is also the file for which the polarizer was switched approximately every 5 minutes so as to allow system temperature measurements to be made on both RCP and LCP. Whether this worked is not clear. MORS_0525 ODR/01351541.ODR has 65 records missing (14050-14114). MORS_0527 MCT/DSS0168A.MCT has 0 records; cause is unknown. Instead, it should have VALUE = 65 for TIME between 21600 s and 70860 s. MORS_0529 ECT/TUS0182A.ECT and ECT/TUS0183A.ECT have zero records. In the first case, there were no data from the USO temperature sensor. In the second, there were no data (of any type) from the spacecraft. MCT/DSS0182A.MCT and MCT/TSZ0181A.MCT have zero records. In both cases, the respective CSV file contains the needed entries (MCH/CSV0182A.MCH contains M-0300 entries, and MCH/CSV0181A.MCH contains M-0775 entries). It is not known why MCT files were not created properly. MORS_0530 MCT/DSS0186A.MCT, MCT/DSS0188A.MCT, and MCT/ELA0188A.MCT have zero records. The respective CSV files seem to contain the needed entries to create these files, but that was not done. The reason is not known.
