See longer description of the problem in yesterday's report (HEA0220A.TXT). Data from occultations 6336i and 6337i (DSS 15, start times 2000/220- 18:09:00 and 20:07:00) have unstable amplitudes. In 6336i the carrier drops almost 2 dB about 2 minutes before ingress, then returns to normal about 30 seconds before surface occultation. During the dropout, the signal level bounced around +/-0.3 dB, much more than prior to and after the problem. About a minute after occultation, the noise power dropped about 2 dB and became unstable in the same way. The amplitude stability problems on 6337i were of smaller magnitude (about 1 dB max) but longer duration. About a third of the pre-occultation period is affected as well as all the time during which noise was being recorded (before telemetry OFF and after ingress). Data from occultation 6339i (DSS 15, start time 2000/221-00:02:00) have a +1 dB noise level change about 60s after ingress. Data from 6340i (DSS 45, start time 2000/221-02:00:00) and 6342i (DSS 63, start time 2000/221-05:55:00) have not been found. The latter were apparently acquired; Tim Smith is investigating both. Data from occultation 6341i (DSS 45, start time 2000/221-03:58:00) have a smooth -1 dB carrier level change over the 150 s before ingress. Occultation 6346e (DSS 63, start time 2000/221-12:33:00) is the first of about a dozen consecutive egress occultations conducted using a special spacecraft maneuver that allows probing in the southern hemisphere when normal HGA gimbal limitations would prevent such measurements. Sami Asmar reports from JPL that a total of three egress occultations have now been captured successfully.
