Twice weekly sequences were uploaded and successfully executed by the spacecraft. The third, fourth and fifth MOC focus star images were taken during this week. The results of calibration #2 were inconclusive due to gaps in the data caused by Deep Space Network difficulty in maintaining downlink during poor weather at the receiver site. Consequently, an additional Calibration (#6) is scheduled on October 3 to permit evaluation of this focus position. Calibrations #3 and #4 were successfully targeted to within 1.6 mr of the designated stars, which also provided engineers with data to improve the precision pointing capabilities of the spacecraft. The next MOLA Polar Scans will be performed October 7-11. Radio Science Occultation Egress Scans are scheduled to occur on October 13 and 14. During the beta-supplement phase of this mission, retrieval of all science and engineering data recorded each day has become increasingly difficult. The planetary geometry combined with a need to maneuver the spacecraft around the HGA gimbal obstruction results in an inability to playback all the data within the nominal downlink window. With less than 45 minutes of each 2 hour orbit available for playback, it takes 12 downlink opportunities over 6 complete orbits just to playback the first six Solid State Recorder (SSR) tracks. A modification of the record/playback strategy has been implemented analogous to pressing the "pause" button on a typical tape recorder. Playback of SSR Track 7 is "paused" just before the spacecraft becomes occulted by Mars or when it maneuvers around the HGA gimbal obstruction. Playback of Track 7 is resumed during the next downlink opportunity. Presently, three separate downlink windows are required to playback SSR Track 7 completely. Hence 1516 hours of DSN tracking support is needed each day to playback all the recorded data. This situation will gradually improve as planetary geometry becomes more favorable early next year. Beta-supplement operation ends in late June 2001. There is a dip in signal amplitude on the order of 1 dB in the baseline of the occultation 6978i recording at DSS 65 (2000/273T05:11:00). The noise level increases by 1 dB approximately 80 seconds after the ingress event in the occultation 6981i recording at DSS 65 (2000/273T11:04:00).
