Sami Asmar has forwarded the following (edited) report from the MGS office: The spacecraft continued nominal mapping operations during this week. Twice weekly sequences were uploaded and successfully executed by the spacecraft. The sixth MOC focus star image was taken on October 3, successfully completing this calibration series. A sequence of 15 MOLA North and South polar scans was loaded into the spacecraft memory for execution October 7-10. Radio Science occultation egress scans are scheduled to occur on October 13 and 14. The Mars Odyssey mission has requested use of the MGS spacecraft to perform a differential one-way ranging test to demonstrate this interferometry technique using quasars to secure an independent data type for navigation purposes. Similar measurements of the Mars '01 spacecraft will be used during the latter portion of its cruise phase to insure orbit insertion accuracy. The test will provide a 'ground-truth' measurement using the known orbital position of MGS for comparison. A major upgrade of the software used by all MGS operations workstations, file servers, databases, etc., began on October 5. This E1.0 installation will continue through October 24 and include computers at LMA and the science operations sites (Science Operations Planning Computers).
