Open Loop Data ============== Data Collection --------------- Open loop data from the MOI occultations at DSS 14 was finally located by Data Control late yesterday. We have queried the NERT Cache and obtained the following. We also queried for the egress period only -- to simplify processing with the SPK file that begins immediately after the MOI burn. YYYY/DDD DSS QUERY SAMP BW DSP BIT TRK REC RECS RECS MAX START STOP RATE MODE RESN MODE LEN MSSG SNR -------- --- -------- -------- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----- ---- ----- 1997/255 14 01:30:00 02:09:00 5000 2500 2 12 1-W 1666 11696 5 28. Anomalies --------- Five missing records. Some evidence of A/D quantization errors for adjacent bins (reported previously). Analyses -------- Dave Hinson has looked at the egress occultation and reports the following (see Figure HEA7260A.PS1 with yesterday's report): The location of the ionospheric measurements is 20 deg S latitude, 33 deg W longitude. The solar zenith angle was 54 deg. The peak electron number density was 140,000 per cubic centimeter at a planetocentric radius of 3530 km. The topside has a well-defined scale height of 40 km between radii 3530 and 3590 km. This implies a plasma temperature of 260 K for electrons and ions in diffusive equilibrium, assuming O2+ to be the principal ion. These results are consistent with previous measurements, but the altitude range (135-195 km) is an interesting one for us. In reviewing previous results, I noticed that Lindal et al. (JGR, 84, 8443-8456, 1979) assumed the principal ion to be CO2+. The plasma temperatures he derived from measured topside scale heights are therefore too large by a factor of about 44/32. Joe Twicken has completed quality analysis of MOI egress data from both DSS 14 and 43; his report: The DSS 14 egress SNR was 2 dB better there than it was at DSS 43 (which I looked at earlier). The Allan Deviations are as follows (based on nine minutes of baseline following the exit side ionosphere): ODS (97/255): LGA, DSS 14; SNR ~29 dB/Hz; Orbit occultation data (0 missing records); Used ~9 minutes of data following ionosphere of exit occultation t = 1.6384 sec sigma = 7.6315e-13 t = 3.2768 sec sigma = 3.2108e-13 t = 6.5536 sec sigma = 2.1772e-13 t = 26.2144 sec sigma = 3.4929e-13 ODS (97/255): LGA, DSS 43; SNR ~27 dB/Hz; Orbit occultation data (0 missing records); Used ~9 minutes of data following ionosphere of exit occultation t = 1.6384 sec sigma = 9.2389e-13 t = 3.2768 sec sigma = 3.3946e-13 t = 6.5536 sec sigma = 1.7384e-13 t = 26.2144 sec sigma = 1.3453e-13 Closed Loop Data ================ Data Collection --------------- We have obtained the following files from OSCAR and EPIC: Original File Name Name on SOPC ------------------------------ ------------ ATDF: 97257T258.DAT;1 7257258A.TDF 97258T260.DAT;1 7258260A.TDF ODF: 97259O260_2.DAT;1 7259260B.ODF 97260O2200.DAT;1 7260260A.ODF 97260O261.DAT;1 7260261A.ODF 97261O261.DAT;1 7261261A.ODF 97261O1800.DAT;2 7261261B.ODF IONCAL: TROPCAL: WEATHER: WEATHER_10_LATEST.TXT;73 70012601.WEA WEATHER_40_LATEST.TXT;72 70012604.WEA WEATHER_60_LATEST.TXT;72 70012606.WEA EOP: Ancillary Data ============== Data Collection --------------- We have obtained the following files from the CDB and other sources: Original File Name Name on SOPC ------------------------------ ------------ AMD: amdgen.P004.out 7260260A.AMD LIT: ltm_i_970912-970922_top_short1 7255265A.LIT MIF: MPD: ONF: OPT: optg_i_970915_OD004_009_V1 7258270A.OPT PCK: SCK: SFO: a0041.01.sfos 7260263A.SFO p0051.01.sfos 7260265A.SFO SOE: a0041.01.soe 7260262A.SOE p0051.01.soe 7260264A.SOE SPK: spk_i_970915_OD004_009_V1 7258270A.SPK TCK: mgs_spice_c_kernel_1997-260.ck 7260260A.TCK
