Open Loop Data ============== Data Collection --------------- The following is based on a report from Trish Priest: The 1998/028 occultation occurred over DSS 43, a 70-m station. The pass was also one-way, so we obtained just over an hour of one-way data before the occultation. We used Radio Science-generated predicts for the first time. The signal remained in the center of the bandpass for the entire pass until it disappeared (on time). DSP Record Times: 028-02:00:00 to 028-03:51:00 One-Way w/ TLM on: 028-02:32:00 to 028:03:36:00 One-Way w/ TLM off: 028-03:36:10 to 028-03:51:47 Expected Surface Begin: 028-03:49:47 We have obtained the following Mars radio occultation open loop data from the NERT Cache. Anomalies --------- Missing records on 1998/024 resulted from buffering problems caused by rapid swap of DSP from Lunar Prospector to MGS support; these were noted in HEA8026B.TXT. There are both long-period (3-6 minute, +/-0.1 dB) and short- period (~7 sec, +/-0.05 dB) amplitude oscillations on the carrier. On 1998/025 there are no obvious "oscillations" in signal amplitude, but the amplitude wanders +/-0.5 dB about its mean value during the 19 minutes of data collection. Carrier-to-noise level was 6 dB below the level on 1998/024. On 1998/026 there was a 1/4 dB drop in signal level 3 minutes before the occultation. The occultation event is accompanied by brief amplitude increase (+1 dB), clearly visible even at a sampling rate of 1 sec. Carrier-to-noise was 17 dB below the level on 1998/024; the occultation represents only a -3.5 dB reduction in total sample power. On 1998/027 there are a couple cycles of ringing (+/-1 dB) associated with the occultation. Some of the signal variations and ringing noted above may be associated with surface reflections in this highly oblique (and grazing) geometry. No search for surface echoes has been attempted yet. Data from the 1998/028 de facto USO Test and occultation have not yet reached the NERT Cache.
