There appears to be no cause/effect between Radio Science operations and the telecom interruption, but the association may raise questions. The telecommunications subsystem today reported a change or interruption in downlink signal momentarily as the S/C enters atmospheric solar eclipse. This interruption was sufficient to cause loss of carrier lock at the DSN at the last eclipse entry this morning. Early indications from analysis show a loss of data during this ingress period from many of the orbits since the S/C started entering the planet's shadow with the transmitter on for Radio Science (RS) purposes. It is believed that the interruptions may occur coincident with the power subsystem's automatic mode switch from solar array to battery supplied power. The investigation will continue and an ISA report will be filed. Performance of the command and downlink subsystems remains strong and RS data collection is not interrupted. General Performance Evaluation: Since occultations began on 1998/024, we have seen only four problems at the quick-look level: (1) somewhat higher amplitude fluctuations than expected (more than +/-0.1 dB), (2) A/D quantiza- tion errors in 12-bit samples, (3) slow delivery of data, and (4) operator errors. Problem (1) remains puzzling, (2) is not worth fixing, (3) seems to have been solved based on recent performance, and (4) is getting better with practice. Other common problems during Cruise--such as spurs, missing records, and POCA errors--have either become very subtle or have been solved. Open Loop Data ============== Data Collection --------------- Trish Priest reports there were no anomalies during data acquisition from occultations #15 and #16. We have transferred the data to Stanford: YYYY/DDD DSS DSP SAMP BW DSP BIT TRK REC RECS RECS SNR START STOP RATE MODE RESN MODE LEN MSSG -------- --- -------- -------- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----- ---- ----- 1998/036 15 20:31:00 20:44:00 5000 2000 2 12 1-W 1666 3901 0 51. 1998/037 65 14:48:50 15:01:00 5000 2000 2 12 1-W 1666 3651 0 44. Anomalies --------- There is an amplitude glitch of about 0.5 dB roughly 4 minutes before Occultation #15. The carrier-to-noise ratio for Occultation #16 is about 7 dB below normal (perhaps weather, as with Occultations #2-3?). Otherwise the data look very good.
