Priest had similar problems with transmission of data last night, as did Paul Eshe this morning. Recent changes in GCF configuration and/or retransmission rate may be responsible; the RSST is investigating. Data from DSS 65 this morning (start times 1998/105-12:44:10 and 1998/105-13:20:00) appear to have been corrupted by serious POCA problems; based on quick-look processing, both will likely be unusable for science. Trish Priest reports that the DSP at SPC 60 has been running the wrong version of SPA-R software. Since that software controls the POCA, upgrading the software may solve many of the SPC 60 POCA problems. The DSP RSCP software is correct; usually the two are upgraded together. An upgrade of the SPA-R software is planned before the next occultation at SPC 60. Station personnel substituted new RSSD digitizers at SPC 60 in an attempt to improve carrier-to-noise levels, which have been running 5-6 dB below levels at other complexes. Given the POCA difficulties, it is impossible to say whether there was immediate improvement. Our quick-look processing returned a level about 11 dB below what we would have expected at another complex (compare DSS 45 49.6 dB with DSS 65 39.0 dB in the table above for ingress, and 14.8 versus 9.0 on egress). We have re-examined data from several earlier occultations and confirmed our belief that SPC 60 levels are consistently low; a detailed report has been mailed to the RSST. Analyses -------- Joe Twicken has completed processing of several recent egress occultations. A slightly edited version of his report: None of the occultations have flat frequency residuals. Neither the SPK nor GDN trajectories seem to be adequate for processing near periapsis. I did not attempt to hand-fix either of the POCA files where the POCA could not be auto-salvaged. If the comment says "very low signal level", that means the processing did not run to completion. Processing includes digital filtering to a bandwidth of about 40 Hz, followed by estimation of signal amplitude and frequency in that bandwidth.
