Our first query had been submitted at about 21h UTC on 1998/193; the second (test) query was submitted at about 22h on 1998/194. We believed both times were well beyond the point when latency would have been a problem. The first query yielded 14.8 MB of data, while the second brought 18.3 MB, nearly a 25 percent increase. The companion pair of queries for DSN monitor data yielded exactly the same number of bytes for both queries. We have been unable to use the new CD writer; there appears to be no device file in our system to support it. Danny Wong, the SA who installed our system, is apparently the only person in the SA office who knows how the new writer works. And Danny has not been available. We may have a work-around for our lack of a tape drive on the new SOPC. It requires a slight relaxation in security but has been successfully used to create and recover tar files in limited testing. We were able to make a system backup of the SOPC yesterday using the ufsdump utility. Transfer of some files announced in recent health reports (especially data types SAK and TCK) have been delayed. Those files should be up-to-date on our magellan.stanford.edu server by later today. Apologies to those inconvenienced.
