Cause of the low signal-to-noise on occultations at 1998/349-21:52:00, 1998/349-23:02:00, and 1998/350-02:00:00 is unknown. Symptoms are very reminiscent of a problem with DSS 45 data from 1998/338 and 339. Past experience suggests these data will not be useful for atmospheric profiles. Symptoms on the DSS 54 occultation beginning 1998/350-02:58:20 are similar to those for the preceding 3 occultations at DSS 34. But about 15 minutes after apparent egress, SNR returns to normal values (SNR rose at approximately 03:36 ERT). This suggests a spacecraft source of the low SNR (perhaps an unusually high modulation index or use of a low-gain antenna). But our (limited set of) TCS engineering plots don't provide any clues. The carrier, in data beginning 1998/350-11:34:00, is below the lower cutoff frequency of the open-loop bandpass filter. The carrier in data beginning at 1998/350-14:33:00 is only about 200 Hz inside the lower cutoff. Data beginning 1998/350-15:43:00 show no carrier. It appears the one-way open-loop tuning predicts are missing the carrier by about 1500 Hz. We have phoned and e-mailed in hopes of getting corrections in place for future occultations.
