The pointing of a platform or an instrument is often expressed in terms of a transformation matrix from some standard inertial reference frame to a instrument-fixed frame. In the past, the instrument was often a camera, and the transformation was thus dubbed the ``C-matrix''; hence the choice of C as the name for the pointing kernel. The data contained in C-kernel files can be accessed and manipulated by a collection of FORTRAN 77 subroutines which are part of the SPICELIB library. These subroutines can be integrated into user application programs. The SPICE system toolkit for a number of computer platforms or information regarding how it can be obtained is located in the SOFTWARE subdirectory of the main directory of this dataset. To use C-kernels, a Spacecraft Clock Kernel (SCLK) is required. Also, for C-Kernels containing orientation of a project-defined frames, a Frame Definitions File is required. Refer to the CK.REQ document provided with the toolkit or available from the NAIF Node of PDS if SPICE toolkit is not included with this data set to get more information on how to access C-kernel data. MGS C-kernels contained on this volume ====================================== The following MGS C-kernels are provided on this volume (only name portion of the file name is shown on the right; the extension of all file names is ".BC"): -- MGS Spacecraft Orientation CK Files: MGS_SC_CRUS CK file covering portions of the Cruise phase of the mission, created by merging regular daily CK files from SC Team at LMA and partially correcting orientation data for time bias; MGS_SC_AB1 CK file covering the whole Aerobraking-1 phase of the mission, created by merging regular daily CK files from SC Team at LMA and partially correcting orientation data for time bias; MGS_SC_SPO1 CK file covering the whole Science Phasing Orbit 1 (SPO-1) phase of the mission, created by merging regular daily CK files from SC Team at LMA and partially correcting orientation data for time bias; MGS_SC_SPO2 CK file covering the whole Science Phasing Orbit 2 (SPO-2) phase of the mission, created by merging regular daily CK files from SC Team at LMA and partially correcting orientation data for time bias; MGS_SC_AB2 CK file covering the whole Aerobraking-2 phase of the mission, created by merging regular daily CK files from SC Team at LMA and partially correcting orientation data for time bias; -- MGS Solar Array Orientation CK Files: MGS_SA_CRUS CK file covering portions of the Cruise phase of the mission, created by merging regular daily CK files from SC Team at LMA and correcting -Y array orientation data for 1 second time bias; MGS_SA_AB1 CK file covering the whole Aerobraking-1 phase of the mission, created by merging regular daily CK files from SC Team at LMA and correcting -Y array orientation data for 1 second time bias; MGS_SA_SPO1 CK file covering the whole Science Phasing Orbit 1 (SPO-1) phase of the mission, created by merging regular daily CK files from SC Team at LMA and correcting -Y array orientation data for 1 second time bias MGS_SA_SPO2 CK file covering the whole Science Phasing Orbit 2 (SPO-2) phase of the mission, created by merging regular daily CK files from SC Team at LMA and correcting -Y array orientation data for 1 second time bias MGS_SA_AB2 CK file covering the whole Aerobraking-2 phase of the mission, created by merging regular daily CK files from SC Team at LMA and correcting -Y array orientation data for 1 second time bias MGS_SA_HINGE_STEADY -Y Solar Array broken hinge deflection CK file for the MAG Team. -- MGS High Gain Antenna Orientation CK Files: MGS_HGA_HINGE HGA deployment hinge rotation CK file. MGS_HGA_GIMBAL_STOWED HGA Gimbals rotation CK file for gimbals in stowed position. The C-Kernels included on this CD-ROM contain actual orientation data in most cases based on values obtained from the spacecraft engineering telemetry. Kernel File Details =================== The most detailed description of the data in a binary CK file is provided in metadata included inside the comment area of the file. This information can be viewed using utility programs COMMNT and SPACIT included into the NAIF Toolkit.
