Instrument Overview =================== The balloon gondola containing the radio system, battery and instruments was 6.9kg, suspended 13m beneath a 3.54m (nominal) diameter superpressure teflon balloon. The most detailed description of the instrumentation is KREMNEV1986; some useful details are in CRISP1990, and the nephelometer specifically is described by RAGENT1986. The initial results and overall mission are described in SAGDEEV1986H. An important limitation is that data were sent (or tracking performed with a data-free carrier signal for VLBI tracking) only every 30 minutes, decreasing to once an hour later in the mission, in order to maximize the battery-limited lifetime. Each transmission conveyed only 852 bits of data - details of the scheme are given in KREMNEV1986.
