                    The Phoenix lander carried the following instruments to the surface
                    of Mars: a robotic arm and camera, a surface stereo imager, a thermal
                    and evolved gas analyzer, a Mars descent imager, a surface properties
                    package, a thermal and electrical conductivity probe, and a meteorological
                    station. It operated from 25 May to 10 November 2008.

                    The Surface Stereo Imager (SSI) was the primary camera on the Phoenix
                    spacecraft. It was a higher resolution version of the imager used for
                    Mars Pathfinder and was provided by the University of Arizona in
                    collaboration with the Max Planck Institute for Solar System Research.

                <description>
                    The Telltale provided a coarse estimate of wind speed and direction.
                    It was a lightweight cylinder suspended by Kevlar fibers from an arm
                    at the top of the meteorological mast. Wind speed was estimated from
                    the amount of deflection that was observed in images, while the wind
                    direction was provided by the deflection direction. A mirror and a
                    calibration cross pattern, which could be imaged simultaneously with
                    the Telltale, were employed to increase the accuracy of the measurement.
                    SSI and RAC cameras could both provide the images, though the SSI was
                    typically used. Telltale was designed and at constructed at Aarhus
                    University in Denmark.

            <type>Planet</type>
            <description>
                Mars is a rocky planet, fourth in order from the sun. It has an equatorial
                radius of approximately 3394 km, massive (but apparently inactive) volcanoes,
                impact craters, deep canyons, a thin atmosphere, and seasonal changes. Its
                atmosphere is primarily carbon dioxide with small quantities of water, both
                of which condense to form caps in the polar regions. Noontime surface
                temperatures near the equator occasionally rise above the freezing point of
                water, making it an interesting target for spacecraft explorations seeking
                signs of life beyond Earth.
