        <name>Planetary Plasma Interactions</name>
        <institution_name>University of California, Los Angeles</institution_name>
        <description>
The purpose of the Planetary Plasma Interactions (PPI) node
of the Planetary Data System is to aid magnetospheric
scientists in finding and acquiring the data necessary for
their research. The system is designed to facilitate
analyses which require data from multiple instruments and/or
multiple spacecraft. The PPI node provides access to a
detailed catalog of data sets available from fields and
particles experiments on planetary missions. This catalog
enables a data system user to determine which data sets are
available and to order these data sets. In addition, the PPI
node provides an on-line browse function which allows a user
to survey a limited subset of data in either graphical or
          tabular form.

The PPI node currently stores data from the Voyager missions
to Jupiter, Saturn, and Uranus. Data are available from the
magnetometer, the plasma waves experiment, the plasma
experiment, and the low-energy charged particle experiment.
The PPI node consists of three sub-nodes with the data
          system located at UCLA.

Access to the PPI node is via a wide-area network (NSI/DECNE
and telephone dial-up communications. Users of the system
are given electronic access to all features of the system,
including the detailed catalog and the browse system. The
system expects the user to have a VT100 emulator for the
catalog and tabular displays and a Tektronix 4014 emulator
for graphical displays. Users of the system are asked to
record their experiences with the system. This information
will be used to aid further development. A users manual has
been prepared for version 1.0. Both hard copy and on-line
versions of the documentation are available for interested
users. For further information please contact Dr. R. J.
Walker at the University of California Los Angeles.

The distributed sub-nodes of PPI are located at UCLA, the
University of Iowa and the Goddard Space Flight Center.
Scientific oversight and data for the prototype data system
were provided by Dr. Barry Mauk at APL, Dr. John Richardson
at MIT, Dr. William Kurth at Iowa, Dr. J. D. Winningham at
Southwest Research Institute, Dr. Alan Cummings at Caltech,
Dr. A. Kliore at JPL and Dr. R. L. McPherron, Dr. C. T.
Russell and Dr. Raymond Walker at UCLA.

The data system was developed at UCLA by Mr. Todd King, Mr.
Steven Joy and Mr. Neal Cline. The system runs on DEC Vax
computers running the VMS operating system. At present the
system is implemented on a VAX workstation 3200 which
front-ends a Sharebase Intelligent Data Machine. Queries to
the Sharebase are written in the Structured Query Language
          (SQL).
