Apollo 15 Lunar Surface Experiments Package Heat Flow Experiment ASCII Data Bundle Overview ======== This PDS4 bundle (urn:nasa:pds:a15hfe_thermal_conductivity) contains Apollo 15 Heat Flow Experiment data migrated from the PDS3 volume A15A-L-HFE-3-THERMAL-CONDUCTIVITY-V1.0. This data set comprises a reduced, subsampled set of the data returned from the Apollo 15 Heat Flow Experiment (HFE) from 31 July 1971 through 31 December 1974. The experiment consisted of two probes placed by the Apollo 15 astronauts in holes drilled in the lunar surface near the Apollo 15 Lunar Surface Experiments Package (ALSEP) site to measure the thermal conductivity. For more information on the experiment and instrumentation see the instrument.cat file in this directory. The data consist of a set of ten ASCII tables with time, temperature differences, and average temperatures readings measured by the thermocouples in the heat flow probes and probe cables. The data have been restored and reformatted from binary data held on magnetic tapes at the NASA National Space Science Data Center (NSSDC) under NSSDC ID of PSPG-00093 (old NSSDC 71-063C-06A). This bundle contains the following collections: data: Apollo 15 Heat Flow Experiment data products (acquired from 1971-07-31 to 1974-12-31) document: -description of the Apollo 15 Heat Flow Experiment data products -landing site maps -descriptions of the original magnetic data tapes from the Apollo 15 and 17 HFE -descriptions of the Apollo 15 mission -descriptions of Apollo 15 ALSEP -descriptions of the Apollo 15 Heat Flow Experiment -Chapter 11, Heat Flow Experiment, of the Apollo 15 Preliminary Science Report Data Products and PDS Labels ============================ Every Apollo 15 Lunar Surface Experiments Package Heat Flow Experiment ASCII data product is accompanied by a PDS label in a file with the same name as the data file, but with the extension ".xml", as PDS labels are written in XML (Extended Markup Language). The labels may be viewed in a text editor or web browser, preferably one that applies special formatting to XML files to make them more readable. The labels may also be read by software that can interpret XML. Apollo 15 Lunar Surface Experiments Package Heat Flow Experiment data are in ASCII tables. All these data files may be read using the PDS4 Viewer tool. Documentation ============= Chapter 11 "Heat Flow Experiment" of the Apollo 15 Preliminary Science Report in the document collection describes the instrument, instrument deployment, and observations of the Apollo 15 Heat Flow Experiment. This dataset is described in more detail in "dataset_description.txt" in the document collection. ============== This bundle was created and archived by the Geosciences Node of the Planetary Data System.
