README ------ This bundle was migrated by the PDS Ring-Moon Systems Node from PDS3 to PDS4. Data files were not affected, and all metadata available in the PDS3 volumes has been captured in the PDS4 bundle. Users can find the original EUV/FUV PDS3 labels in the Cassini UVIS volset at https://pds-rings.seti.org/viewmaster/volumes/COUVIS_0xxx. As part of the migration process, a number of errors in the PDS3 metadata were identified and corrected. For products affected by these changes, additional comments have been added to the PDS4 labels. A complete description of the corrections is available in migration_modifications_uvis_euvfuv_saturn.txt in the document collection, which users are encouraged to review. The document collection also includes a comprehensive UVIS User's Guide. This was originally written for PDS3 and has been updated for PDS4 (specifically, the EUV/FUV parts). The PDS3 Software Interface Specification (SIS) provides a detailed description of the PDS3 UVIS data products. There is a one-to-one correspondence between raw data and calibration files, except in two cases during the cruise to Saturn (not in this bundle): euv2002_157_02_11 and euv2002_157_17_13, for which there are no calibration files. For those, notes have been entered into the raw data PDS4 labels (and the README for the Cruise bundle). In this bundle, there was one calibration file that required re-naming (to match its raw data counterpart) by removing the seconds suffix from the filename, from fuv2012_276_09_33_52_cal_3.dat to fuv2012_276_09_33_cal_3.dat. This has been noted in the raw and calibration data labels for that observation. The products in the browse collection contain significant amounts of information. Refer to uvis-preview-interpretation.txt in the document collection for guidance on interpreting these image products. For many stellar occultations, only the occulted star is reported in the Target_Identification area of the label – the science target (e.g. Saturn, Titan) is missing. Check the Array_3D_Spectrum.description in the data_raw labels for details about targets. Some observations during the Saturn phase were solar (not stellar) ring occultations. For those, there is additional documentation contained in the document collection, refer to the Cassini UVIS Ring Solar Occultation Atlas Volume 1: Revs 009 - 090 (from day 159 of 2005 (8th June) to day 298 of 2008 (24th October)) and the Cassini UVIS Ring Solar Occultation Atlas Volume 2: Revs 172 - 279 (from day 267 of 2012 (23rd September) to day 168 of 2017 (17th June)). In the original PDS3 delivery, each volume had a CALIB/ directory, which contained the calibration files that are now included in the PDS4 calibration collection. Another subfolder SOFTWARE/CALIB/ contained the software and associated input files that were used to generate the calibration data. PDS will not support or maintain software in the archive, and so those files are not directly included in this PDS4 bundle - instead they are available via the linked Source_Product_External reference for the calibration software in bundle.lblx. Similarly, the geometry values included in the data object labels were computed using the software contained in the GEOMETRY_ENGINE.PRO file located under the PDS3 SOFTWARE/GEOM directory (and using the NAIF SPICE software library). These are available via the linked Source_Product_External reference for the geometry software in bundle.lblx. Likewise, the IDL routines to load UVIS PDS3 data and label files into an IDL session were provided under the PDS3 SOFTWARE/READERS directory. These routines are available via the linked Source_Product_External reference for the readers software in bundle.lblx. Note there is a Python package named `pyuvis` that provides tools to work with Cassini UVIS data (https://github.com/Cassini-UVIS/pyuvis). Additional improved and enhanced metadata will eventually be archived by the Ring-Moon Systems Node in a separate bundle. In the meantime, enhanced metadata can be obtained at https://pds-rings.seti.org/viewmaster/metadata/COUVIS_0xxx/COUVIS_0999. ------------------------------------------------------ For questions concerning this data set, please contact: Mia Mace / Matthew Tiscareno Ring-Moon Systems Node, NASA PDS SETI Institute 339 Bernardo Ave. Mountain View, CA 94043 Email: mmace@seti.org Email: mtiscareno@seti.org
