This data set contains Raw data taken by the New Horizons Long Range
Reconnaissance Imager instrument during the CRUISE TO FIRST KBO ENCOUNTER
mission phase.

LORRI is a narrow angle (Field Of View, FOV = 0.29 degree square), high
resolution (5 microradian/pixel), telescope. A two-dimensional (2-D) CCD
detector, with 1024x1024 pixels (optically active region) operates in
standard frame-transfer mode. LORRI can also perform on-chip 4x4 binning
to produce images of 256x256 pixels. LORRI has no color filters and so
provides panchromatic imaging over a wide bandpass extending
approximately from 350 nm to 850 nm. The common data product is a 2-D
image of brightnesses that can be calibrated to physical units once
color spectrum information is known.

This data includes calibrations using NGC3532, as well as a number of
distant Kuiper Belt Objects (DKBOs) and star field images containing
MU69 [ASTEROID 486958 (2014 MU69)], the next flyby target KBO, to help
with Optical Navigation (OpNav) planning.

The imaged DKBOs include: 2002 KX14 [ASTEROID 119951 (2002 KX14)],
Huya, Pholus, Makemake, Haumea, 2012 HZ84 [ASTEROID 516977 (2012 HZ84)],
Quaoar, 2014 OE394, 2011 HJ103, 2012 HE85, and 2002 MS4 [ASTEROID 307261
(2002 MS4)]. These observations mostly used the LORRI 4x4 binned mode,
with 10 second exposures for each image, and between 30-45 images for
each observation. The spacecraft was set to use a guidance and control
mode that keeps the spacecraft attitude tightly centered using
thrusters.

These data were migrated from the previously released PDS3 data set
NH-X-LORRI-2-KEMCRUISE1-V2.0.

Migrated from PDS3. New labels were written to the PDS4 standard, with metadata
incorporated into a New Horizons mission dictionary. The data are unchanged.
The values of some PDS4 geometry attributes that also appear in the FITS headers
have been recalculated using a newer SPICE kernel. (B. Hirsch)
