The Psyche mission is a planetary mission to investigate the Psyche asteroid and accomplish several scientific objectives, among them determining whether the asteroid is the exposed core of a proto-planetary body. Each sensor operates in an identical manner wherein a neutron can be absorbed by 3He atoms in the gas volume producing a proton and a triton with a total energy of 765 keV. The proton and triton deposit their kinetic energy in the gas volume, producing a signal corresponding to 764 keV that serves as an unambiguous indicator of a detected neutron.
