The official version is stored as a set of database tables in the PDS Data Set Catalog. But most users see the PDS Data Dictionary in the form of a text file, named pdsdd.full, which is used by software tools to validate or document the contents of PDS labels. To improve the performance of these tools, a text index, named pdsdd.idx is generated from the pdsdd.full file, and is used in conjunction with the pdsdd.full file. For user convenience, the PDS Data Dictionary is distributed in a package, named datadictionary.zip, which contains the following files: pdsdd.full - the PDS Data Dictionary used with software tools, which is the same for all supported computing platforms pdsdd_win.idx - the indexed version of the PDS Data Dictionary, for use on the Windows platform pdsdd_solaris.idx - the indexed version of the PDS Data Dictionary, for use on the Solaris platform pdsdd_linux.idx - the indexed version of the PDS Data Dictionary, for use on the Linux platform readme.txt - a brief explanation on how to use the PDS Data Dictionary files and an update on data changes of each release allrefs.out - list all reference id and their associated references pdscat_ri.rpt - list database refrential integraty keys, their relation.attribute to foreign relation.attribute It is important to remember that the pdsdd.full file is a local copy of the PDS Data Dictionary, which users can modify at their local sites. If the pdsdd.full is modified, then the index file must be re-generated, using the make_index program, which is available from the PDS online system. To make the changes part of the official PDS Data Dictionary, they must be submitted to the PDS for review and inclusion in the database. The official PDS Data Dictionary changes over time, and users need to download updated copies of the pdsdd.full to make use of these changes.
