NAME Cassini Plasma Spectrometer for CO
TYPE Spectrometer
DESCRIPTION The Cassini Plasma Spectrometer (CAPS) consisted of three sensors: the Electron Spectrometer (ELS), Ion Beam Spectrometer (IBS), and Ion Mass Spectrometer (IMS). ELS measured electron velocity distributions from 0.7 eV to 30 keV, allowing studies of thermal and energetic electrons. IBS measured ion velocity distributions with high angular and energy resolution from 1 eV to 50 keV, focusing on ion beams in the solar wind and Titan's ionosphere. IMS analyzed the composition of magnetospheric plasmas with atomic and molecular resolution.CAPS had several scientific objectives, including in-situ studies of plasma interactions in Saturn's magnetosphere, examining auroral phenomena, and analyzing Titan's atmosphere and ionosphere, among others. The instruments provided data on plasma dynamics, structure, and composition.Operationally, the ELS, IBS, and IMS facilitated extensive measurement capabilities across a wide range of densities and energy levels, contributing to a comprehensive understanding of Saturn's magnetosphere and interactions with its moons. Each sensor had specialized electronics and calibration methods to maintain data integrity and accuracy throughout the mission. The instruments showcased sophisticated designs, relying on advanced technologies like microchannel plates and time-of-flight mass spectrometry to achieve their goals. In summary, the CAPS instrument enabled detailed exploration of the plasma environment around Saturn and Titan, pushing forward the frontiers of space science through its innovative sensor technology and comprehensive scientific objectives.
