| DESCRIPTION |
The Clementine 1 spacecraft was equipped with two star tracker cameras (A and B Star Tracker Cameras) positioned on opposite sides to ensure continuous star field coverage. Their primary role was to determine spacecraft attitude by comparing stellar images against an onboard star catalog, while scientific observations were secondary and mainly targeted dim objects such as the lunar surface and earth shine. The cameras had a specialized design including concentric optics and a CCD array, and utilized a Thomson focal plane array for rapid electronic shuttering. They featured three operational modes: programmable integration time, gain mode, and offset mode, with specific settings predominately used for lunar observations. Key specifications included a pixel format of 576x384, a field of view of 43° x 28°, and an 8-bit A/D resolution. Calibration was performed pre-launch and included capturing images of known stars in-flight. Notably, the cameras were not used for observations on the sunlit side of the Moon due to their sensitivity.
