| DESCRIPTION |
The Faint Object Spectrograph (FOS) aboard the Hubble Space Telescope was a near-infrared spectrometer that covered wavelengths from 115 to 800 nm. The FOS was able to operate at two different modes: low resolution (reaching 26th magnitude in one hour), and high resolution (reaching 22nd magnitude in one hour). The FOS was replaced by the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (STIS) in 1997.
