NAME Mars Global Surveyor Spacecraft Radio Science Subsystem
TYPE Radio Science
DESCRIPTION The Mars Global Surveyor Spacecraft (MGS) Radio Science investigations utilized instrumentation with elements on the spacecraft and at the NASA Deep Space Network (DSN). Much of this was shared equipment, being used for routine telecommunications as well as for Radio Science. The performance and calibration of both the spacecraft and tracking stations directly affected the radio science data accuracy, and they played a major role in determining the quality of the results. The investigations used Doppler shifts in the spacecraft?s radio signal to study Mars? gravity field, atmosphere, and ionosphere. They provided detailed measurements of Mars' gravitational variations, helping scientists understand the planet's internal structure. The experiment also examined the ionosphere by analyzing how radio signals were affected as they passed through Mars? atmosphere. Additionally, they tracked seasonal atmospheric changes and contributed to mapping surface features by monitoring orbit variations.
