NAME Mariner 5 Magnetometer (MAG)
TYPE Magnetometer
DESCRIPTION The Mariner 5 Triaxial Low Field Helium Magnetometer measuredinterplanetary and Venusian magnetic fields by detecting changes inhelium absorptivity to circularly polarized infrared light. Mounted on a1.5-m boom, it had a plus/minus 204 nT range with 0.2 nT precision. Itoperated in high-rate mode (3 samples/12.6s) from June-July 1967 andlow-rate mode (3 samples/50.4s) for the remaining mission. Data qualitywas excellent except for a brief uncertain period in September-October1967.
