| NAME |
Radio Science Subsystem (RSS) for NEAR Shoemaker
|
| TYPE |
Radio Science
|
| DESCRIPTION |
The Radio Science Subsystem (RSS), as is typical in planetary spacecraft, employed both onboard hardware and the characteristics of the communication exchange with the Deep Space Network (DSN). The spacecraft hardware included X-band transponders as well as two redundant microstrip patch low-gain antennas, one microstrip pathc medium-gain antenna, and one high-gain antenna dish 1.5m in diameter. The RSS was used to determine mass and bulk density of both (433) Eros and the flyby target (253) Mathilde. While orbiting (433) Eros, the RSS was used to ingestigate the inner structure of the asteroid through determination and analysis of the higher order gravity fields.
