| NAME |
The Deep Impact Impactor (DII) Spacecraft
|
| TYPE |
Spacecraft
|
| DESCRIPTION |
The Deep Impact Impactor spacecraft, carried to the encounter by the Flyby spacecraft, consisted of a targeting system, which included the Impact Targeting Sensor that returned images as the impact approached the surface of comet 9P/Tempel 1, as well as the 100kg copper Cratering Mass. Copper was selected because copper was not expected to be a significant constituent of the comet's makeup, and its spectral signature could thus be ignored.
