| DESCRIPTION |
Pioneer 9 was launched in 1968 as a follow-up to Pioneer 8, with a similar mission to study the solar environment. Weighing about 147 kg, it was equipped with instruments to monitor cosmic rays, the solar wind, and magnetic fields. Pioneer 9 provided important data on solar activity and the interplanetary medium. It continued to send scientific data back to Earth until 1978, well beyond its expected operational life.
