Instrument Host Overview
========================
The Institute for Astronomy of the University of Hawaii operates the
2.2-meter telescope at Mauna Kea Observatory, on the summit of Mauna Kea
on the Big Island of Hawaii. The telescope is located at an altitude
of 4,214 m (13,824 ft), latitude +19 deg 49 min 34 sec, longitude
155 deg 28 min 20 sec West. The University also operates the
61-cm telescope at the Observatory.
Typical zenith dark sky brightness values for Mauna Kea are
B = 22.4, V = 21.1, Rc = 20.3, J = 16, H = 14.5, K' = 14.0, and
K = 13.5 mag arcsec^-2.
Minimum temperatures at the summit are generally at or below
freezing, but rarely go lower than -10 deg C (14 deg F) during
the winter. In the summer, they usually range around freezing. Daytime
temperatures are normally about 10 deg C (50 deg F).
See the University of Hawaii Telescopes at Mauna Kea Observatory User
Manual [UHGUIDE1996] for a detailed description of the 2.2-meter telescope.
