DATA_SET_DESCRIPTION |
Data Set Overview
=================
This data set contains the Zappala et al. (1995) [ZAPPALAETAL1995]
asteroid dynamical families classifications, based on the
hierarchical clustering method applied to the proper elements of
Milani & Knezevic (1994) [MILANI&KNEZEVIC1994]. It includes 12,487
numbered and unnumbered asteroids.
Parameters
==========
For each asteroid included in the analysis, the following
parameters are provided.
The proper elements a', e', and sin(i') of version 6.8.5 of the
fully analytical theory of Milani and Knezevic (1995)
[MILANI&KNEZEVIC1995]. These are the proper elements used as
inputs to the hierarchical clustering analysis.
The name of the family to which the asteroid was assigned. This is
blank for asteroids not assigned to a family. The family name is
identical with the name of the lowest-numbered asteroid in the
family.
A flag specifying whether the asteroid belongs to a nominal family
(F) or a clump (C). These terms are defined in Zappala et al.
(1995) [ZAPPALAETAL1995].
A quality code indicating the reliability of the family
assignment.
Data
====
The complete family classifications are found in the file
'family.tab'.
Ancillary Data
==============
Files for each individual family contain just the asteroids in that
family at a quality code of 2 or 3. For the convenience of users,
absolute magnitudes, albedos, and diameters have been included in
these files.
Modification History
--------------------
This data set was first archived in 1994, including the family
classifications of Zappala et al. (1990) [ZAPPALAETAL1990] as well
as several historical classifications. This is the first update to
the data set, using the most recent and extensive classifications
of Zappala et al. (1995) [ZAPPALAETAL1995]. The historical
classifications will be added in a future update.
