DATA_SET_DESCRIPTION Data Set Overview : This dataset contains the asteroid dynamical family classifications contained in Zappala, et al. (1995) [ZAPPALAETAL1995]. These are based on the hierarchical clustering method applied to the proper elements of Milani and Knezevic (1994) [MILANI&KNEZEVIC1994]. 12,487 asteroid, numbered and unnumbered, are included. The dataset also includes a compilation of the historical asteroid families. Parameters : For each asteroid included in the analysis, the following parameters are provided: o The proper elements a', e', and sin(i') of version 6.8.5 of the fully analytical theory of Milani and Knezevic, published in Milani and Knezevic (1994) [MILANI&KNEZEVIC1994]. These are the proper elements used as input to the hierarchical clustering analysis. o The name of the family to which the asteroid was assigned; this is blank for asteroids not assigned to a family. The family name is identical to the name of the lowest-numbered asteroid in the family. o A flag indicating whether the asteroid belongs to a nominal family (F) or a clump (C). These terms are defined in Zappala, et al. (1995) [ZAPPALAETAL1995]. o A quality code indicating the reliability of the family assignment Data : The complete Zappala family classifications are found in the file 'family.tab'. The historical classifications are in the file 'hisfam.tab'. Modification History : In September 2000 it was discovered that, due to the peculiarities of the naming conventions in Kozai (1979) [KOZAI1979], some asteroids were mis-identified. These identifications have been checked and corrected as needed. Two records discovered to be duplicates were removed at this time. This data set was first archived in 1994, including the family classifications of Zappala et al. (1990) as well as several historical classifications. The data set was updated in 1997, using the most recent and extensive classifications of Zappala et al. (1995) [ZAPPALAETAL1995]. A more complete set of historical classifications have been added for the 1998 update.
