Data Set Overview : This data set reproduces the major data tables of 'The Sizes, Shapes, Albedos, and Colors of Cometary Nuclei' (Lamy et al., 2004 in 'Comets II'). In this article the authors present a survey of the available literature and present what they found to be the most reliable results for the various parameters reported. Parameters : Measurements of effective radius, axial ratio and period are presented for 153 comets and 34 asteroidal objects suspected of being dormant or extinct comet nuclei. Additional tables present colors, albedos, and dimensions of nuclei. Processing : These data have been keyed in to flat ASCII tables from the published paper. The format has been modified slightly to accommodate PDS standards, usual SBN practices, and the preferences of users as expressed by the external reviewers. At the peer review for these data, the reviewers recommended removing the rotation periods originally included in the main data table (the 'comet.tab' file). The rotation period information was apparently included as a convenience in the published table, and the data were not of the same quality as the rest of the columns. The column was removed before final archiving. (A separate rotation period dataset was recommended for archiving.) Media/Format : These data are available online for immediate downloading.

Confidence Level Overview : Lamy et al. (2004) contains extensive remarks regarding the various observations and measurements included in these tables. While the tables present an excellent summary of the state of knowledge, the user is strongly encouraged to consult the published paper for the various caveats and notations included in the remarks. Review : This data set underwent peer review on 12 December 2005. The data were accepted pending some minor corrections, which have been made, and the relatively major change noted in the data set description.

The authors culled this data from published or well-known unpublished sources, and have indicated what they judge to be the most reliable value available.
