DATA_SET_DESCRIPTION Data Set Overview : This dataset includes the Galileo Orbiter Solid State Imaging data on the asteroids 243 Ida and 951 Gaspra. These data have already been archived in PDS under the dataset 'GO-A/E-SSI-2-REDR-V1.0' and are reproduced here for convenient access to those users specifically concerned with 243 Ida and 951 Gaspra. Only those images in which Gaspra, Ida, or Ida's moon Dactyl actually appear have been included here. The originally released VICAR-format images have been converted to FITS format. Some ancillary information including the image prefix bytes, the telemetry table, and the bad data values header have been stripped from the original VICAR images and are not included here. Those who need these ancillary data can obtain them from the original data release. As an aid in selecting the desired images, an index to the images is provided, giving image time, filter, exposure time, gain state, time from closest approach, resolution, distance to the asteroid, the sub-spacecraft latitude and longitude, and other parameters. Processing : These images have been converted from VICAR format to FITS format using the image reduction package IRAF. The image prefix tables, telemetry tables, and bad data value headers have been removed from the images. All relevant label keywords describing the image have been retained in the image labels. Data : The data are included in a series of files with filenames of the form Xnnnn.FTS. X is a letter A through I referring to SPACECRAFT_CLOCK_START_COUNT as follows: first 6 digits of SPACECRAFT_CLOCK_START_COUNT: A 010727 B 010728 C 010729 D 010730 E 010731 F 020253 G 020254 H 020255 I 020256 and nnnn are the last four digits of the SPACECRAFT_CLOCK_START_COUNT. Images beginning with A - E contain Gaspra, and those beginning with F - I contain Ida and/or Dactyl. Ancillary Data : As an aid in selecting particular images of interest, a number of parameters pertaining to each image are displayed with the list of images. In addition, the originally released indices to the Ida and Gaspra images are also included. These are 'idaindex.tab' and 'gasindex.tab'. Entries are retained only for those images in which Ida, Dactyl, or Gaspra appear. All the fields listed in the originally released indices are retained, except that the file specification has been changed to refer to the files in the Ida/Gaspra collection. Media/Format : This dataset is made available for browsing or downloading on the WWW site at http://pdssbn.astro.umd.edu/review. This web site will be maintained for a limited period of time in support of NASA supported data analysis programs, and then the data will be recorded to a more permanent medium for distribution.
