Data Set Overview : This is a selected portion of the Galileo PPR data set acquired for the Shoemaker-Levy 9 fragment impacts with Jupiter in July 1994. These data focus on the time periods in which the major events were detected. Times given are equivalent UTC times for Earth-based observers. Parameters : The data set includes time information, converted from spacecraft units to the equivalent time for an earthbased observer. The raw data numbers are included, to allow some assessment of noise and interchannel variation (for the G event, only the average of the two channels is given, with an offset value removed). A flux level is given, based on a preflight calibration. Processing : No processing has been applied except for the averaging for G, the subtraction of offset values, and the multiplication by a calibration constant to derive flux. Data : All these data are a time series of samples, obtained contiguously except for G, where the data are extracted from a larger set that shows the effect of scan platform motion (the field of view going on and off Jupiter). For this data set, only the peak G data are shown for each 5.3 second scan (those points most clearly on Jupiter, as determined by signal level). Ancillary Data : No additional data are needed to see the shape of the PPR light curves. Coordinate System : None is relevant to the data set. All of Jupiter falls within the PPR field of view for each point. Software : No software is available for these data. They were prepared using simple IDL procedures from raw data files. Media/Format : ASCII files on this CD-ROM volume.

Confidence Level Overview : Timing is considered accurate to about 1 second. Calculation of flux is dependent on removal of drift in the data set, which has not been done to a high degree at this point. There may also be error in the calibration constant applied. Review : This is not a PDS-reviewed product. It was prepared by the PPR co- investigator, T.Z. Martin at JPL. The derivation of time information has been checked by two persons. Data Coverage/Quality : More complete time coverage is available for each impact, but does not contain any clearly relevant additional information about the impacts. Redundant PPR data in the stream have been removed by a process that is deemed reliable. Limitations : The main possible limitation is based on the inconsistency between PPR signal levels for Jupiter and those predicted from calculations of Jupiter's brightness at the relevant phase angle of 53 degrees. The discrepancy may lie in a changed instrument sensitivity since launch. Further study of calibration data is required.
