DATA_SET_DESCRIPTION |
The MSL SAM EDR data set has been safed in PDS. It has not been peer reviewed and is not considered to be certified data. The SAM instrument team and PDS agreed to safe the EDR data rather than archive it, because the data were not likely to be of interest to most science users. Users will be more interested in the lowest-level SAM RDR data set, MSL-M-SAM-2-RDR-L0-V1, which contains the same unprocessed science data as the EDR, but in a more accessible format and with extraneous non-science components removed. The SAM EDR data are binary tables of several different types. Each data file is accompanied by a PDS label that describes the general format of the table, although the table columns are not well-defined. More detailed information about the contents can be found in the SAM EDR Software Interface Specification (SIS) in the DOCUMENT directory. The SAM EDR data were obtained by the PDS Geosciences Node from the MSL Operations Product Generation Subsystem (OPGS) FEI server. These operations products were not intended for a formal PDS archive, and therefore the PDS labels were not fully PDS-compliant. The Geosciences Node made the following corrections to the labels to make them PDS-compliant. No changes were made to the data files. SAM EDR Label Corrections 1. Changed keyword name EXPERIMENT_ID to MSL:SAM_EXPERIMENT_ID. 2. Changed keyword name MSL:LOCAL_MEAN_SOLAR_TIME_SOL to MSL:LOCAL_MEAN_SOLAR_TIME. 3. Changed keyword name STATUS to MSL:PRODUCT_COMPLETION_STATUS. 4. If SPACECRAFT_CLOCK_STOP_COUNT value was '', changed it to 'UNK'. 5. Changed keyword value 1e+30 to 1.0e+30 for several keywords. 6. Changed object names like *DPO.*_COLUMN to COLUMN. 7. Added comma to end of line with keyword value MULTIMISSION IMAGE PROCESSING LABORATORY. 8. Removed comma from beginning of line with keyword value JET PROPULSION LAB. 9. Changed comment SAM SICENCE OBJECT to SAM SCIENCE OBJECT. 10. Changed object name SAM_ENGINEERING_TABLE to SCIENCE_TABLE, to match the pointer statement in the label. 11. If no ROW_BYTES keyword was present, added ROW_BYTES after ROWS, with a value equal to that of RECORD_BYTES. 12. Corrected value of COLUMNS keyword to show the actual number of columns. 13. If START_BYTE values started at 0, incremented all START_BYTE values by 1. 14. If BYTES value was not equal to 1, 2, or 4, added ITEMS and ITEM_BYTES keywords. The labels contain a known error that has not been corrected. Values for the keyword SOLAR_LONGITUDE range from -180 to 180, rather than from 0 to 360, which is the MSL standard. The negative values for SOLAR_LONGITUDE may be converted to the standard range by adding 360.
