DATA_SET_DESCRIPTION
Data Set Overview : This data set contains spectroscopic, continuum and engineering (housekeeping) data acquired by the MIRO instrument during ground testing in the thermal- vacuum facility at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory. These tests were designed by Sam Gulkis, Peg Frerking, Cindy Kahn and Timothy Koch. The entire MIRO team at JPL participated (in shifts) in these tests, since the instrument was on for many weeks continuously and required round-the clock monitoring. The main objectives of these tests were: 1) to characterize the performance of the MIRO instrument throughout the the temperature range in which it is expected to operate (-15C to +55C). 2) to test the software algorithms for operations and onboard data handling. Hardware tests were performed in thermal vacuum to determine radiometry characteristics and temperature suceptabilities. Software commands were ckecked to ensure functionality of commands in TV environment. It should be emphasized that this data set was not used to attempt to perform a radiometric or frequency calibration of the MIRO data. These calibrations are performed in flight, by observations of known astronomical targets. The procedure description (CALIBRATION_PROC) and log files for these tests are included in the DOCUMENT directory of this data set. Author List : The author list in the CITATION_DESC includes only those persons who worked on preparing this archive dataset for delivery. The full list of all persons involved in the MIRO experiment is (taken from the GULKISETAL2007 reference): S. Gulkis, Frerking, M., Crovisier, J., Beaudin, G., Hartogh, P., Encrenaz, P., Koch, T., Kahn, C., Salinas, Y., Nowicki, R., Irigoyen, R., Janssen, M., Stek, P., Hofstadter, M., Allen, M., Backus, C., Kamp, L., Jarchow, C., Steinmetz, E., Deschamps, A., Krieg, J., Gheudin, M., Bockelee-Morvan, D., Biver, N., Encrenaz, T., Despois, D., Ip, W., Lellouch, E., Mann, I., Muhleman, D., Rauer, H., Schloerb, P., and Spilker, T. Data Set Summary : A summary of the tests is provided in the following chart. The temperatures of the instrument were primarily controlled by two components whose temperatures could be set to a given value. There were: Large Plate: determined MIRO's Sensor EU and USO temperatures. Small Plate: determined MIRO's OB temperature (which could not exceed 40C). In this chart, the start time of each temperature cycle is given, with the values requested for the two controlled temperatures, in degrees C: Cycle # Time T(Large Plate) T(Small Plate) ------- ---- -------------- -------------- 1 2001-05-21/19:08 22 22 2 2001-05-22/09:36 52 37 3 2001-05-23/02:24 42 37 4 2001-05-23/18:21 32 32 5 2001-05-23/11:02 22 22 6 2001-05-25/02:59 12 12 7 2001-05-29/07:50 2 2 8 2001-05-30/06:09 -8 -8 9 2001-05-30/22:43 -22 -20 10 2001-05-31/17:58 -14 -10 11 2001-06-01/17:58 2 2 12 2001-06-02/00:23 12 12 1 2001-06-02/20:27 22 22 2 2001-06-03/01:37 52 37 3 2001-06-03/06:06 42 37 4 2001-06-03/11:06 32 32 5 2001-06-03/16:43 22 22 6 2001-06-03/21:10 12 12 7 2001-06-04/01:25 2 2 8 2001-06-04/06:13 -8 -8 9 2001-06-04/10:45 -22 -20 10 2001-06-04/15:21 2 2 11 2001-06-04/21:13 22 22 12 2001-06-05/01:43 42 37 1 2001-06-07/09:03 22 22 2 2001-06-07/15:15 52 37 3 2001-06-07/18:55 42 37 4 2001-06-07/21:21 32 32 5 2001-06-08/08:00 22 22 6 2001-06-08/10:48 12 12 7 2001-06-08/13:44 2 2 8 2001-06-08/17:00 -8 -8 9 2001-06-08/20:05 -18 -18 end 2001-06-08/23:05 Subsequently, miscellaneous tests were carried out as described in the log files. Note that Thermal-Vacuum tests actually started on 2001-04-23. However, a failure of the CPU occurred and all testing was restarted on 2001-05-21.
