DATA_SET_DESCRIPTION
Data Set Overview
  =================
    This data set contains derived radial profiles from the finest-
    resolution Voyager images of Saturn's rings. It has been released
    to support the analysis of Cassini data obtained during Saturn
    Orbit Insertion on July 1, 2004.

    The two profiles currently provided show the dark side of the
    rings from Voyager 1 and the lit side from Voyager 2.

  Parameters
  ==========
    The measured quantity is I/F, where intensity I is expressed
    relative to F where pi*F is the incident solar flux density.
    By this definition, I/F = 1 for a perfectly-diffusing 'Lambert'
    surface when illuminated and viewed normally. At phase angle
    0 (exact backscatter), I/F equals a surface's geometric albedo.

  Processing
  ==========
    Details of the processing are found in the file
    DOCUMENT/PROFILES.TXT.

  Data
  ====
    The source data files are the Voyager images.

    The derived files provided are radial profiles of I/F vs.
    radius in the ring plane.

  Ancillary Data
  ==============
    No ancillary data has been provided.

  Coordinate System
  =================
    Not applicable.

  Software
  ========
    None provided.

  Media/Format
  ============
    This data set is archived on compact disc (CDROM) media.
    Organization and formats are according to PDS and ISO 9660
    level 2 standards.

CONFIDENCE_LEVEL_NOTE
Confidence Level Overview
  =========================

    Considerable effort has been expended to ensure that the
    profiles are geometrically and photometrically accurate

    Geometric accuracy should be at the level of a few km; the
    final radial scale has been defined by finding the closest
    possible match between these profiles and the Voyager PPS
    ring occultation profile. See PDS volume VG_2801 for that
    data set.

    The images were calibrated according to standard procedures,
    using the VICAR software distributed by JPL. Photometric
    accuracy should be good to ~5%. Background uncertainties
    vary across the rings, depending upon proximity to known
    empty regions. However, background uncertainties are
    generally much smaller than the signal amplitude.

  Data Coverage and Quality
  =========================

    The provided profiles cover the entire main ring system from
    inside the C Ring to beyond the edge of the A Ring. The resolution
    is ~5 km in each of the best profiles from Voyager 1 and Voyager
    2.
